Stephen Sills named Creative Director of NYC landmark
Jan 20, 2011

Interior designer Stephen Sills has been appointed to Creative Director for The Apthorp, a landmark residential building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side that converted from a rental to a condominium in 2008. The Renaissance Revival building was designed by architects Clinton & Russell for absentee landowner William Waldorf Astor between 1906 and 1908 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places and a city landmark. Residents have included Nora Ephron, Al Pacino, Conan O'Brien, Cyndi Lauper, Rosie O'Donnell, and Steve Kroft.
The Apthorp’s new design aesthetic will be entrusted to Sills, who is known for a subdued color palette, rich fabrics, and contemporary art. He will be responsible for selecting colors, finishes, appointments and cabinetry for The Apthorp's public and private spaces and model residence.

“The grand and gracious style of the Apthorp is much like a classic Parisian apartment with its Old World proportions and intricate detailing not found anywhere else in New York,” says Sills. “It serves as an incredible canvas. My goal is to create an archetypal apartment where neoclassical and modern motifs combine into a contemporary and multifunctional home.”

Sills' recent projects have included the St. Regis Hotels in Washington, D.C. and New York, the Connaught Hotel in London and private residences in New York and California. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Vogue, W, New York Magazine, New York Times Magazine, and Harper's Bazaar. His Bedford residence is included in Dominic Bradbury's "American Designers at Home" and HGTV's "Top 10 Most Beautiful Homes." Stephen is a member of Architectural Digest's AD100, and was included in AD's "30 Deans of American Design."
