Virgin America goes modernist for Palm Springs design event
Jan 12, 2016

California-based Virgin America is partnering with Modernism Week on an interactive exhibit to be hosted at the airline’s gate at Palm Springs International Airport during the annual Palm Springs festival, to be held February 11 to 21.

Incoming visitors will be greeted by an airport gate reimagined to capture the spirit of the golden age of flying, as well as an exhibit that will include late-1960s-era lounge chairs with matching ottomans, tables, Lucite lamps and a mod rug, in a scheme designed by Marc Joseph of the Wonderama vintage furniture and art boutique in Palm Springs. Los Angeles-based artist Nat Reed will provide a custom-made backdrop for the area.

Modernism Week’s annual 11-day festival will spotlight the Modernism Show & Sale, and will also offer tours of homes, architectural walks, bike and bus tours, a lecture and film series, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, a Palm Springs Walk of Stars dedication for architect Richard Harrison, vintage fashion and classic cars displays, garden tours and a vintage travel trailer exhibition.

“The City of Palm Springs is thrilled Virgin America and Modernism Week, two globally famous brands known for incredible style and sophistication, have partnered to celebrate the magic of ultra-cool Palm Springs and all that our legendary resort destination has to offer,” says Mayor Robert Moon. “It’s just more proof Palm Springs truly is like no place else.”

Virgin America premiered its Palm Springs service in 2011 and has since expanded its seasonal service to the area with daily nonstop trips six days a week from San Francisco to Palm Springs, as well as nonstop flight service from Palm Springs to New York (JFK).

Shares Virgin America chief marketing officer Luanne Calvert, “With a focus on design, Virgin America has always been about bringing the magic and style back to flying—and we’re excited to partner with Modernism Week to add a touch of ’60s glamour to the airport at Palm Springs through this unique exhibition. The exhibit is a fun nod to the best in design, and we look forward to making travelers headed to this year’s Modernism Week feel like their last name is Draper—with a beautiful in-flight experience on Virgin America and a welcome at PSP like no other.”
