Vivienne Westwood launches wallpaper line with Cole & Son
Oct 26, 2009

The Vivienne Westwood for Cole & Son wallpapers are all based on signature designs from her fashion collections such as the iconic Squiggle print from the Autumn-Winter 81/82 Pirate collection and the more recent Cut-Out Lace from the Spring-Summer 07 I am Expensiv collection. From the early days of punk rock to establishing her own international fashion house Vivienne Westwood has been a major influence for over three decades. She is known as a symbol of British avant-garde and for her inimitable take on traditional British style and design. All the wallpapers are now available from http://www.fabricsandpapers.com. Vivienneʼs Lace was drawn by Vivienne herself and she has incorporated her signature in a hand drawn rendering of lace. Tartan is synonymous with Vivienne Westwoodʼs designs and is quintessentially British. For wallpaper, Westwood has printed Tartan on the bias to give a new look. Trompe lʼOeil Drape takes its inspiration from Vivienne Westwoodʼs couture and the drapery techniques for which she has become famous. The drapery used in this design is copied from the skirt of a famous tartan wedding dress from the Autumn-Winter 93/94 Anglomania collection worn by Kate Moss. The Absense of Rose artwork with crystal-like highlights first appeared in a recent collection of knitwear. One of Vivienne Westwoodʼs best-known prints, Squiggle has developed from the Autumn-Winter 81/82 Pirate collection. It has become a classic of the house and it continues to be used in her clothing and accessory lines. Shirting is a favorite design, Vivienne Westwood has always referenced traditional shirting stripes such as those worn by gentlemen in the city. Inspired by a paper cut-out design which was executed in very small scale, Magnolia has been used as a print on silk and wool in the fashion collections. The design for Cut-Out Lace first appeared in the Spring-Summer 07 I am Expensiv collection and was developed from a fragment of antique lace. Dogtooth is a traditional British pattern often used in the fashion collections and this version has been hand-drawn by Vivienne herself. Vivienne often looks to history and art as a source of creativity and the Elizabethan style design Insects was inspired by the wardrobe of Elizabeth I. Paper Jewelry was inspired by the jewelry for the Autumn-Winter 00/01 Winter collection. The jewelry was made entirely out of paper and cardboard with a trompe lʼoeil jewelry design drawn on the pieces. These were based on old technical drawings of royal jewels. Vivienne Westwood is known for her use of iconic British imagery and Union Jack was inspired by an antique flag recovered from a ship, now reinterpreted with a weathered and sun-bleached look.
