Jewelry designer Jessica Kagan Cushman, daughter of the legendary furniture designer Vladimir Kagan and his wife, needlework expert Erica Wilson, has launched a custom hardware collection, which includes semiprecious stones, fossils, engraved quotes and fine casting.
New pieces from the JKC&D collection
The hardware line, JKC&D, sprang from an idea by the company’s co-founder, philanthropist (and Kagan’s jewelry customer) Judy Dimon, who turned one of her bracelets into a cabinet pull. Dimon suggested creating a hardware business founded on the idea of “jewelry for the home.” The work is entirely bespoke, and is designed and produced largely in the brand’s Connecticut workshop.
Kagan Cushman sat down with EAL to chat about the line and her inspiration:
Are all of the debuting designs inspired by your jewelry work?
Many of them are. We’re using Italian cameos set into jewel-like frames and a lot of pieces that are inspired by my iconic Nantucket Bangles. There are many pieces that are simply functional and beautiful, such as some oversized lever handles that we are in the process of designing and are really excited about.
Cameo Cabinet Knobs
Can you share some of the bespoke designs you’ve created?
All of our pieces incorporate a bespoke aspect, from choosing the finish to creating an entirely new design. A perfect example is the Cameo Cabinet Knobs; I developed them together with a client who found beautiful vintage cameos while on a family trip to Italy. I worked closely with them to create cabinet knobs that fit perfectly into their kitchen.
What is your relationship with interior designers for this project? Should they reach out to your studio if they want to order pieces?
We sell specifically to the trade and work with designers and architects throughout the entire design process. From design inception to installation, we ensure the hardware functions perfectly and beautifully. Designers should visit our website for more details (JKCandD.com) and contact our sales department (firstname.lastname@example.org). Write to us—we pride ourselves on exceptional customer service and enjoy the one-on-one interaction!
