What not to miss during Salone de Mobile in Milan

Design aficionados from around the globe are preparing their schedules and packing their suitcases for Salone de Mobile and the hundreds of ancillary events taking place throughout Milan, April 9-14.
From new product introductions to emerging design talent, exhibitions and showroom events, Editor at Large has compiled a list of events and highlights to help navigate the week.
Direct from the London Design Festival, designjunction will present EDIT, an edited version of its London show featuring a mix of international brands and cutting-edge labels, installations, pop-up shops and eateries. Apartment 58 enlisted Michael Sodeau to recreate its private members club in London to serve as a lounge and media center, furnished by Modus, it will combine contemporary furniture pieces with mid-century design classics and limited edition works of art. Designersblock
Emerging designers will come together at the Designersblock exhibition at the Magazzini (Via Valenza 2, 20144), a showcase of young designer work. PechaKucha, the global creative network, will host a series of talks by designers there; and design magazine Cool Hunting will curate explorative activity and host master classes.

Kaikado Objects Collection by Japan Handmade for Stellar Works
MOST: Disrupting Design will take place at Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia (Via Olona 6b, 20123 Milan) April 9 - 14 featuring events, exhibitions and installations that challenge existing models of routes to market, industry norms and the position of the designer in the supply chain. Fab will be working with the American Design Club, a collective that provides a platform to encourage and promote emerging designers in the United States, to select designers whose work will be shown simultaneously in Milan and online. Hugo Passos, who has recently collaborated with Monocle Shop, shows  everyday objects inspired by Piet Mondrian.

Meet My Project is a place for up-and-coming industry professionals across many fields to showcase their work during the fair. The mission is to promote design and contemporary creativity and unite designers, publishers, manufacturers and distributors. Through a selection of innovative objects in the world of textile, furniture and new technologies, the exhibit explores the secrets of their evolution from the initial concept to the final product, depending on the choice of each designer. The exhibition runs from April 9 –13 at Viale Crispi/Via Varese (Brera district).

Bleiswijk's new "Heavy Metal" design
Furniture designer Joost van Bleiswijk will launch his latest "Heavy Metal" collection at Moooi’s Milan at via Savona 56, and will be joined by the current and new collections by Marcel Wanders, Studio Job and Nika Zupanc. A press preview will take place Monday, April 8 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. There will also be an international preview of the book co-EVOLUTION at Spazio Rosanna Orlandi. The book highlights the first 10 years of the careers of van Bleiswijk and Kiki van Eijk.

Danish Chromatism will introduce a selection of traditional and contemporary design from 30 Danish companies in a playful and unusual chromatic interpretation. Exhibitors include Carl Hansen & Son, Ege, Fabula Living and Fritz Hansen. A press preview will take place Monday at the Triennale di Milano (viale Alemagna 6, 20121), April 8 from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and an opening party on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:30.
Designers Monica Armani, Francisco Gomez Paz, Alberto Meda, Paolo Rizzatto and Daniel Rybakken will present their new lighting collections represented by LucePlan at Hall 13 Stand, B19 and C18. The showroom at Corso Monforte 7 will be hosting a cocktail party on Tuesday, April 9 from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
The brainchild of Pierpaolo Seguso, the entrance hall of the Triennale di Milano will be transformed into "Fuori Salone Digital," which is intended to involve the public in the process of instinctive creativity and sharing through a digital platform. A flow of ideas and images for a new way of direct participation in the exhibition will be splashed across the "Wall of Inpsiration" revealed on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. Seguso will be exhibiting at Euroluce, Pad. 09 Stand G10, throughout the week.
Marni will present the 2013 edition of the 100 Chairs display at the showroom daily from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (Viale Umbria 42, Milan). A special cocktail party will take place on Thursday, April 11 from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. Marni will also host the annual Inhabi-Tants workshop on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
 
Hermés collection
Hermés is enriching its universe for the home with a host of new creations, "les Nécessaires d'Hermés," a range of multi-functional pieces of furniture imagined by French designer Philippe Nigro, a collection of furnishing fabrics and wallpapers, and bespoke furniture creations at the Circolo Filologico (Via Clerici, 10). They will host an intimate, invitation-only cocktail on April 10 and a private breakfast on Thursday April 11.

OMA collection
Knoll will host a media preview of the OMA Collection with Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas on Monday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. (Prada via Fogazzaro 36). Knoll tapped Koolhaas, one of the most provocative thinkers and daring form-makers of his generation, to help mark its 75th anniversary.
Armani Casa will be hosting an invitation-only cocktail party on Tuesday, April 9.
Baccarat will host an open house and highlights exhibition at the Palazzo Morando via Sant’ Andrea 6, throughout the week. A cocktail party will be held on Wednesday, April 10 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. This is a private event, by invitation only.

Dedar
Dedar will host a collection preview at via Fiori Chiari, 18 in the Brera District throughout the week. A cocktail party will be held on Thursday, April 11 from 8:30 – 11:00 p.m. (RSVP)
Boffi will host a private cocktail party at the showroom (Via Solferino 11, 20121) on Monday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the week. The showroom will also be open from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. daily. (RSVP).
Promemoria will host a preview of its new collection Sun Tales at Via Bagutta 13/Via Montenapoleone 8. The space will be open 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. each day and they will host cocktails in the garden on Wednesday, April 10 from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Tom Dixon Rough & Smooth collection
Tom Dixon will present Rough & Smooth at at MOST (Via Olona, 6b, 20123), a tale of two contrasting aesthetics, at the show this year. A new British sensibility presented as a journey through the warehouse and into the grand Tea House. A press preview to view the collection will be held on Monday, April 8 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m.
New products designed by Frederick Roijé, Kranen/Gille and Roderick Vos will be presented by New Duivendrecht in Via Tortona 32 and is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Moroso (Via Pontaccio8/10) will feature Werner Aisslinger’s Bikini Island collection featuring a modular unit that maximizes spatial efficiency and draws inspiration from the tradition of Italian carpentry. Patricia Urquiola will present Mafalda, a collection of wood-frame armchairs with backrests composed of thermoformed fabric, and Wishbone, a small stackable wooden chair with a rush backrest. Urquiola has also created THE REVOLVING ROOM, an installation designed in collaboration with Kvadrat at the Moroso showroom.

Venini Arte Pura will be showing new collections in the showroom (Spazio Venini, Via Monte Napoleone 9) from 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. daily. A private, invitation-only cocktail party will take place on Wednesday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m.
Delta Light hosts a premiere of the Lighting Bible, along with drinks, fingergoods and vibes on April 10 at 4pm in Hall 13, Stand B14.

Jean-Marc Grady's "Clair-Obscur"
French designer Jean-Marc Grady created a window installation called “Clair-Obscur” at the Sisley concept store (Piazza San Babila). Composing a kind of landscape, the various floor lamps, gueridons and constructions made of lampshades use white and black as a contrasted allusion to light and shadow.
For its official launch, WonderGlass will feature products that trace an imaginary journey through Venice, featuring installations by notable designers and architects. Jayme Hayon will stage a contemporary carnival with traditional masks; Nao Tamura will encounter a multitude of buoys floating on the horizon; Nendo will use light to describe the appearance of shadows lurking behind the hidden corners of Venetian “calle”; and Zaha Hadid will create a flock of crystals. Donghia will be showcasing new furniture and textiles at both Hall 5, Stand E08 and the Rubelli Showroom (Via San Maurilio 19) throughout the week.
For the first time, Richard Lampert will present “Atelier,” both a shelf and a coat rack designed by Marco Dessí, as well as the “Frame“ shelf designed by Alexander Seifried. It can be viewed in exhibition at Hall 20, Booth E 07.
Nendo's Creative Director Oki Sato will create two installations for Caesarstone, which will be presented at Palazzo Crivelli in the heart of the Brera Design District. The Stone-Edge Table collection consists of seven wooden tables, embellished with corner and leg details. The second installation, “StoneGarden,” will be revealed in the Palazzo's courtyard.
The Salone de Mobile will be held at Cosmit, the Milan Fairgrounds, Rho, Foro Bunaparte 65. Fair hours are 9:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. each day. For additional information on the fair and events, visit the website.

SEED Installation
On Tuesday, April 9, right at the start of Salone/Euroluce, Foscarini will open its first permanent space in Milan's Brera district. For its opening, there will be an installation called "SEED" by architect Attillio Stocchi. (Foscarini Spazio Brera via Fiori Chiari 28)
