Multidisciplinary artist Tristan Govignon is the first
featured artist to be presented at Newel, the country's largest decorative arts collection, in a series highlighting works by artists featured in their Manhattan and Long Island City showrooms.
The exhibition includes 20 paintings, sculptures, and photographs from Govignon's "Divination" series. The recent photographs taken in the streets and metros of Paris, France are created using concepts similar to Alfred Stieglitz’s method of Equivalents. The images captured in these environments frame energetic and sometimes meditative imagery that Govignon sees as archetypal, and offers the viewer the opportunity to derive their own visceral interpretations from his contemporary compositions. His playful perspective transforms the commonplace into dreamlike narratives.
The paintings in this exhibition are inspired by similar environments and created with an layered and textural approach. One wonders whether the photographs inspired the paintings or vice versa.
The sculptures follow the exhibition’s imaginative theme and
present organic forms that embody mother nature with titles like Cyclone, Nature’s Fury, and Tempest.
