Joaquim Tenreiro at R 20th Century Gallery
Joaquim Tenreiro is the father of 20th century Brazilian design and is featured at the R Gallery. With an unparalleled acuity for form, scale, detailing and craftsmanship he helped steer his generation of designers from exquisite copies of traditional European furniture to an aesthetic that embraced Brazilian culture and emerging modern preferences.
Tenreiro considered himself a sculptor who made furniture and his pieces reveal the obsessive attention to making that eventually drove him from the business of design. His designs set themselves apart from others of his era through the unique curves and hand carved detailing that often is not immediately visible. The beveled edges found beneath a chair's arms or seat, or the angle of a chair or table leg is often surprising in its grace and delicacy.
