Sand Collection by Madeline Weinrib
Textiles designer Madeline Weinrib presents her “Sand Collection” of hand woven carpets, silk ikats and hand-blocked fabrics that bring a tactile quality to pieces often considered two-dimensional. The body of work represents an unvarnished expression of what inspires Weinrib, communicated not through a canvas but through a medium that we can touch and feel.
The collection represents Weinrib’s own version of sand paintings, inspired by the abstract expressionist painter Antonio Tapies, who was renowned for his practice of utilizing sand, dirt, and crushed marble in his work. Intrigued, Weinrib studied sand painting, taking an apprenticeship in Venezuela. The coarse bluntness of Tapies’ art and Weinrib’s own exploration of the medium served as models for Weinrib’s work.
